Farewell Dinner for Sudhir and Sowmiya akka
So, the ethereally funny community in Palampur is changing with few folks leaving. Hmmm. I am not jumping for joy neither bawling in a corner about this fact because this is so confusing!
But, I am heartbroken Sudhir, Sowmiya akka, Abisha and Chikku are leaving. Why? Why? Why? They added a very nice mix to the community here. Sudhir and I had many common interests especially Cricket and other sports, photography and tech and so on. Anyway, Things happen. We can't always see the invisible hand behind this but we know He is there.
So, we wanted to call them home for dinner. Being the perpetual bore, in-affable and illiterate dork, I wouldn't have a clue how to have hosted this dinner. But, that's why I have my sweetheart, who is a ...sweetheart. Her depth of interpersonal intelligence astonishes me. She is able to see even between the cracks when I am oblivious to what is obvious. God doesn't make mistakes.
She cooked a four-course meal, and she upended herself once again. Let's start with the best food that exists in this world, the Biriyani. With the loftier meat. Mutton. Not the other one. The Hyderabadi Basmati rice fresh from Big Bazaar performed as if it was picked up for this task. Long, sleek, flawless, white complexion and laid out beautifully, the dusky orange rice was cooked to perfection. The right amount of moisture helped to wash it down the throat. The meat itself was tender, red and juicy. The boiling and cooking had it's effect on the young lamb that the meat broke down in shreds. And that's a good thing as every mouthful had the chunky bite of meat. The second dish was the lowly, not expecting much side dish, chicken 65. Or as Abi would call it, Chicken Kebab. Or we can use the right term to address it - Chicken 65. My goodness, being the underdog, the Chicken 65 kicked some serious ass today. It was literally - Chicken - Ka - Baap. The chicken 65 was cooked to perfection that even the one tiny piece that looked burnt tasted sumptuous. The outer coat was a glazed gradient from dark red to black and with every bite, the supple white beauty was exposed and you were admiration for it was shortened by the scramble to have another bite. Wasn't it something.
Next, we had the humble raitha. Lots of curd mixed with onion chops, carrot gratings and coriander sprinklings becomes just the perfect companion to all that is described above. Yes, this salted goodness can never be sufficient that one can commonly see people licking this off their fingers in a near empty plate. And finally the dessert. Chocolate - biscuit - almonds - walnuts - chocochips - mousse. Need I say more? Yes it was frozen. Dollops of this goodness leapt into our mouths. I actually had the left over from someone's plate.
So hear ends my tirade about what I had for dinner tonight. Maybe this is a delayed reflex action after seeing Julie meets Julia. My wife is the man of the match for this wonderful evening.
Ok, let me not be a pig. Any evening is about the people in it. And today we didn't have any ordinary people but a very close family who will be leaving us soon. Like I said earlier, I am heartbroken. I imagined doing life with them for many many years. Good bye Sudhir, Sowmiya akka, Abisha and Chikku. We love and we'll miss you very much. The dinner made the evening memorable. Thank you sweetheart.
